Quelom was born in 1943 AA, in the Silken Sins, a brothel on the outskirts of Thebia, to his red fox mother, Aremina and an unknown stag-hyena client. Aremina chose to keep him, believing her pregnancy to be a blessed coincidence, as she had been contemplating motherhood.

Raised communally among other children, mostly the offspring of brothel workers, Quelom's early life was spent helping with chores and playing with his surrogate siblings. His first experiments in alchemy came through cooking, where he would often tweak recipes, usually to mixed results. Curious by nature, he constantly bombarded the adults with questions, sometimes to their irritation. The brothel's regular visitors included apothecaries, which exposed Quelom to basic herbalism and a rudimentary understanding of diseases.

Recognizing his inquisitive nature, his mother arranged an apprenticeship for him with a local alchemist when he turned fourteen. Quelom later learned that his mother had paid for this opportunity by offering free services to the alchemist. The arrangement benefited the wolverine master, who gained cheap labor and pleasure services, while Quelom learned the basics of alchemy—contraceptives, herbal remedies, and basic potions. By nineteen, he had become proficient enough to handle much of the work alone, though he kept quiet about the strange sensations he sometimes experienced when working with ingredients. It felt as if he could "taste" fresh herbs by simply looking at them, though he dismissed it as an odd intuition.

Quelom's life took a darker turn when he discovered his master's involvement with criminal organizations, a revelation that soon pulled him into the world of poisons, explosives, and covert trade. His magical sensitivity, once a vague oddity, became a valuable tool in this new life. At twenty-one, he attempted a dangerous experiment by infusing magic into a bomb. The resulting explosion destroyed the laboratory, killed his teacher, and left Quelom with a permanent scar on his throat.

After the accident, Quelom became a traveling alchemist. He moved frequently, living in various cities, learning new languages, and honing his skills at packing light and erasing his tracks—especially when it came to his more illicit activities. He worked for wealthy clients, crafting poisons, explosives, and even inks for secret communications. Occasionally, he dabbled in healing agents for underworld figures, but his focus remained on darker crafts. Proficient with throwing knives, a sabre, and his own body when necessary, he also cautiously used his magic to enhance his senses, though he feared its unpredictable nature.

A pivotal moment came at twenty-four, when Quelom learned a harsh lesson about trust. A friend, an otter to whom he had revealed the story of his scar, had asked for his help. Quelom’s habitual distrust kept him distant, and by the time he acted, it was too late—the otter perished in a fire. In his memory, Quelom still wears the scarf gifted to him by the otter. This event led him to vow that if he ever found someone he truly considered a friend again, he would trust them without hesitation, no matter his instincts to remain guarded.

Throughout his travels, Quelom never ceased his alchemical experiments, though he was wary of how much magic he allowed himself to use. Yet, he had grown so accustomed to the constant hum of magic on the edges of his perception that working without it seemed impossible. He often read tales of legendary artifacts and immortality, dismissing them as mere fantasies—until, in 1970, he came across a lead on something he had long considered mythical.
